Music Geek

Talking to Girls About Duran Duran: One Young Man's Quest for True Love and a Cooler HaircutAnother recent summer read which I highly enjoyed was Rob Sheffield's 'Talking to Girls About Duran Duran: One Young Man's Quest for True Love and a Cooler Haircut'. This guy has been a music journalist forever, and his most recent work is an ode to music of the 80's and all of the kids who came of age during the rise of MTV. He's incredibly knowledgeable about new wave artists, and Duran Duran in particular. He's always marveled at the fact that women are so enamored with them and harbors a deep adoration of them himself. In fact, he's often used his extensive knowledge of the band to gain leverage with doting female fans. It gives you that warm, fuzzy John Hughes style nostalgia. At the very least, you'll have some excellent new downloads for you ipod.

Love Is a Mix Tape: Life and Loss, One Song at a TimeOn that note, go ahead and read his 'Love is a Mixed Tape' too. This one is an homage to his deceased first wife and the love of music that they shared. It's a little heart wrenching, but lovely. The bottom line is that if you like to geek out about music, this is your guy.
