I just got back from a morning run and found myself thinking about Haruki Murakami's 'What I Talk About When I Talk About Running'. I'm the wimpiest runner there ever was, but I do feel like it gets in your system and makes you feel compelled to talk about it. I love to nerd out over comparing ipod mixes and the best neighborhood routes. Running as a part of a large group makes me feel absolutely elated, though I tend to start to sputter and gasp after about four miles.
Murakami is no joke. He's run countless marathons and participated in an ungodly amount of triathlons. Not only is he a hugely talented writer (see The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle), but he's also a gifted athlete. I'd love to meet him. If you're interested in both running and writing, this is a great read. Murakami becomes much more human as he divulges about his challenges in both arenas. I have a hard time believing that a man of his stature would have any insecurities at all. I guess we're all more alike than we might think.
