For the Runners

What I Talk About When I Talk About Running (Vintage International)I just got back from a morning run and found myself thinking about Haruki Murakami's 'What I Talk About When I Talk About Running'.  I'm the wimpiest runner there ever was, but I do feel like it gets in your system and makes you feel compelled to talk about it.  I love to nerd out over comparing ipod mixes and the best neighborhood routes.  Running as a part of a large group makes me feel absolutely elated, though I tend to start to sputter and gasp after about four miles.

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle: A Novel
Murakami is no joke.  He's run countless marathons and participated in an ungodly amount of triathlons. Not only is he a hugely talented writer (see The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle), but he's also a gifted athlete.  I'd love to meet him.  If you're interested in both running and writing, this is a great read.  Murakami becomes much more human as he divulges about his challenges in both arenas.  I have a hard time believing that a man of his stature would have any insecurities at all.  I guess we're all more alike than we might think.
