Tolerance

OK, so I'm getting on the soapbox today because I'm tired of hearing about kids committing suicide and getting bashed for their sexual orientation.  Enough already!  It's the new millenium, for god's sake.  Let's figure out a way to be tolerant.  Talk to your kids about it.  Let's stop breeding hatred.

On a recent vacation, I wandered into a book store looking for a good bedtime story for my daughter.  I randomly picked up a gem called Oliver Button Is a Sissy.  It's about a kid who doesn't really identify with the gender norms of being a boy.  He'd rather dance than play football.  He catches a lot of grief about it from his friends, but is ultimately accepted by his peers because of his passion for the things he truly cares about.

It's been a great conversation piece for us and provides a perfect avenue for discussing the fact that it's OK to be different.  I've referred to this book in many a pinch and it applies to all differences, not just those associated with sexual preferences.  There are a few other titles in this genre that come highly recommended.  If you like Oliver Button, you should also try William's DollAnd Tango Makes Three and King and King.  Tolerance can be learned at any age.  Let's teach it early.  Bring back the love, y'all.  We can't afford any more hate.
